TEPS370 Professional Studies Assignment 1: Towards a Philosophy of Learning and Teaching How do you go about learning (something new)? Learning is the ability to obtain new information, strengthen current knowledge, explore values, and acquire skills that benefit everyday life. Learning is continuous; it is not restricted to any specific time, nor place, religion nor culture. Every living thing has the opportunity to learn. Reflecting on my secondary schooling, my teachers used various styles of learning to enable students to understand new ideas and grasp concepts. The learning styles that I preferred and found the most successful were dependent on the subject area. The subject areas that I excelled in used a combination of the four main learning styles that include visual, audio/auditory, read/write, and kinaesthetic. Most commonly, Performing Arts subjects implemented all four learning styles. In another subject area, studying the German language, I experienced difficulty preparing for NCEA exams as the teacher preferred to use the ‘read/write’ learning style exclusively. This teaching approach left limited resources for students to explore ways of learning outside of the classroom and away from textbooks. I completed my Bachelor of Arts with a double major in Music and Theatre at Victoria University of Wellington.
